A Word from Your Mommy Makeover Specialist
A mommy makeover is a very gratifying procedure because it really can be transformative — both physically and emotionally. Most of the moms I work with are healthy, active women who are dissatisfied with the lax, sagging belly; residual fat; and deflated breasts that can result from one or more pregnancies. By sculpting the breasts, midsection, and sometimes hips and thighs, I can help these women to feel more confident and sexy, which is something every mom appreciates.

Why a mommy makeover may be right for me
There's no way around it: Pregnancy and breastfeeding often change the body in ways that are essentially irreversible through diet and exercise alone. The breasts may become stretched or deflated, the nipples may begin to point downward, and the abdomen may become lax and saggy. There may also be stubborn pockets of fat that remain even after you get back into your fitness routine.
Mommy makeover surgery can correct for breasts that have begun to sag or lost their volume. It can restore the breasts and nipples to a higher position, too. And for the midsection, surgery can address three major causes of tummy pooch:
- Excess skin (by removing it during an abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck)
- Excess fat (by removing it through liposuction)
- Weakened abdominal muscles (by repairing the abdominal wall and suturing the muscles back together)
Overall, a mommy makeover is designed to undo the adverse physical effects of motherhood in a single surgery. If you are at or near a weight you are comfortable maintaining and you are healthy enough to undergo surgery, the procedure is likely to be the best way to achieve the results you want.
The right combination of procedures
The most common choice is a surgery that combines breast enhancement (whether it's breast augmentation, breast lift, or both) with a tummy tuck and liposuction. That said, "mommy makeover" is really a bit of a blanket term. There is no set combination of procedures that must be performed.
The right combination is the one that gets you the results you want. Some women choose to combine one or more of the above with facial rejuvenation procedures; others decide to add labiaplasty.
During your consultation, Dr. Rao will take the time to get to know you and your cosmetic goals. From there, you and he will collaborate to arrive at the final combination of procedures.
My procedure: What to expect
Because there are so many options, it's difficult to generalize about your procedure. Dr. Rao will get into those details with you at your consultation. If your procedure includes a tummy tuck, your incision will go from hip to hip, scooping low, just above the pubic area. If your procedure includes breast enhancement, you have a host of options to consider (which Dr. Rao will cover during your consultation).
However, no matter which procedures you choose, you will be under general anesthesia for the duration of your procedure, and you will need to have a friend or family member drive you home. Dr. Rao will also work with you to schedule the date of your first follow-up visit — meant to check on your progress and, often, to remove sutures — usually within about a week of your surgery date.
My recovery process
Your specific recovery timeline is something that Dr. Rao will need to discuss with you during your consultation, but given that a mommy makeover combines several surgical procedures, it's wise to plan on taking up to 2 weeks off of work and setting aside that time to rest and relax at home while your body heals.
You'll need to avoid any heavy lifting (including lifting your children) and any strenuous activity during that time, so it's also wise to enlist the help of family and friends with the things such as prepping meals, doing chores around the house, and taking care of the kids.
That said, while you will be setting aside any kind of physical activity that strains your body, you do want to keep moving as much as possible to prevent blood clots. Take short walks a few times a day, limiting yourself to short distances with readily available surfaces to lean on as you begin.
As with recovery, your final results will vary based on the combination of procedures you've chosen, but the common outcome is a renewed confidence in your femininity and a new sense of comfort in your own skin. Think of a mommy makeover as your custom path to comprehensive rejuvenation and feeling happier and more confident.
