Learn About Liposuction
With liposuction, also referred to as lipoplasty, suction lipectomy or liposculpture, Dr. Rao can improve the contours and proportions of a wide range of areas. Treatment sites include love handles, abdomen, upper and lower legs, buttocks, chin, neck, arms, chest and back. The best candidates for liposuction are those who exhibit all of the following:
- Reasonably healthy eating and exercise habits
- Good overall physical and mental health
- Realistic expectations about the results
- Trouble slimming problem areas through diet and exercise alone
The goal of liposuction is to improve body shape and esthetics through the removal of fat. Liposuction is not a substitute for diet and exercise, nor is it a treatment for obesity.
When you come to Dr. Rao's medical office in Tucson for liposuction, you will have an in-depth consultation with Dr. Rao. He will work with you to determine your treatment plan, including the area(s) to treat and the best technique for you.
At the start of your liposuction procedure, you will likely receive a local anesthetic. Dr. Rao will use additional methods to diminish pain, as well as reduce bleeding. Dr. Rao will insert a thin tube called a cannula through small incisions to carefully and gradually sculpt and remove fat from the treatment area. Dressings will be applied to the treatment site.
Recovery time from liposuction depends on many factors, including the number of areas treated, the method of treatment and if the liposuction treatment was combined with other procedures such as tummy tuck. Bruising, swelling and temporary numbness may occur; the degree of these is also dependent on the type and extent of liposuction treatment.
Time away from work is typically a week or less, depending on your job and the specifics of your procedure. You will be instructed to wear compression garments over the following few weeks to promote optimal healing. Strenuous activity should be avoided for at least the first few days, but walking is encouraged during your recovery.
Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from your body, but you can still gain weight after liposuction. With a balanced diet and exercise, you should enjoy long-lasting results.
Your results and how quickly they appear will vary based on your treatment and your body's ability to heal. As swelling subsides, your trimmer contours may become evident as soon as days or weeks following your procedure. After about 1 to 6 months, your final results will be visible, revealing your new, more slender self.
Patients who wish to avoid surgery may consider CoolSculpting®. This FDA-cleared procedure is completely nonsurgical and offers targeted reduction of many common areas of unwanted fat.
