Learn About Your Breast Reduction
Dr. Rao recognizes that overly large breasts can be very uncomfortable, even painful. You may develop shoulder grooving, back pain, rashes and posture problems. Finding clothes that fit can be a chore. Oversize breasts can interfere with your daily life, work-related duties or the activities you love. You may dislike the appearance of your breasts, too. All of these are understandable motives for undergoing reduction mammoplasty (breast reduction).
During breast reduction, excess fat, glandular tissue and skin is strategically removed to reduce breast weight and size. The remaining tissue is lifted and reshaped for an aesthetically pleasing result. Incisions are made on the breasts, but care is taken to make the scarring as inconspicuous as possible. The procedure takes approximately 1 to 3 hours per breast and is done under general anesthesia. Following the procedure, you will be closely monitored in a recovery room before being released.
Bandages are used to protect the surgery site, along with a surgical compression garment. Your dressings will be removed during a follow-up appointment. Expect 7 to 10 days of time away from work and about 6 weeks avoiding strenuous activities. You will see Dr. Rao for subsequent appointments to monitor your progress.
Your newly contoured breasts will be in better balance with your body, alleviating or eliminating the discomfort you had. There will be some scarring, but most breast reduction patients find this a small price to pay for the relief that comes with this procedure. Many patients report feeling more confident about their body, as well as greater freedom to enjoy the activities they love. The physical, mental and emotional relief make breast reduction patients some of the most satisfied patients we see.
For a more full-body enhancement, women sometimes combine their breast reduction with a body contouring procedure for a complete mommy makeover.
