Making an Informed Decision
Learn About Your Breast Augmentation
Are you a good candidate for breast augmentation?
Even though most women undergo breast augmentation because they're unsatisfied with the size of their breasts, the surgery can actually remedy several aesthetic concerns, including:
- Breasts that are too small
- Breasts that have lost shape or volume after pregnancy
- Asymmetrical breasts
- Breasts that have changed as the result of weight loss or aging
- Breasts that don't match the proportions of the rest of your body
During your consultation with Dr. Rao, you learn much more about what breast augmentation may do for you. If you're a candidate for the surgery, Dr. Rao helps you choose the right implants for you based on your existing anatomy and your desired results.
Your breast implant options
Breast implants can be filled to a wide range of sizes, and we offer breast implants manufactured by Mentor® and Sientra®, which gives our patients the following choices:
- Saline or silicone: Because both are FDA-approved, this primarily comes down to personal preference. Saline implants can be filled after they are placed into the pocket beneath the muscle, which allows for smaller incisions. Silicone is favored by women who want a very soft and natural feel to their implants.
- High-, medium-, or low-profile: "Profile" affects how much the implants project outward from the chest. Generally speaking, high-profile implants are a good choice for those with narrower chests, whereas women with wider chests often see the best results with moderate- or low-profile implants.
- Round or teardrop: Referring to the shape of the implants, "round" leads to more volume in the upper poles. Teardrop (sometimes called "anatomical") implants mimic the natural slope of a breast.
During your consultation with Dr. Rao, you can explore any or all of these variables when you use our breast implant sizers, which simulate how the implants you eventually choose will reshape your breasts.
Dr. Rao performs breast augmentation as an outpatient procedure using a combination of local anesthesia with sedation. This approach typically helps expedite the recuperation process while still keeping patients very comfortable during surgery. Often, the procedure lasts less than 1 hour.
During the surgery, Dr. Rao makes an incision either along the lower edge of your areola (periareolar) or along the crease below your breast (inframammary). The location and length of the incision will be determined prior to your surgery, likely during your consultation.
Your Incision Options
He inserts your chosen implant below your pectoral muscle. Once he has evaluated your implants for symmetry, he closes the incisions. After a brief period of observation, you may return home with the help of a friend or family member.
Your Recovery Process
For the first several days after your surgery, it's important to rest as much as possible and avoid strenuous activities, especially those that require stooping, reaching, or heavy lifting. You may want to use prescription pain medicine for a couple of days, but discomfort is typically easy to manage. During this time, you'll likely need to wear a special surgical bra that supports your breasts as they heal. At a follow-up appointment, Dr. Rao will advise you on when you can safely transition to standard bras.
Most women feel comfortable enough to return to work after about 5 to 7 days, although women with more physically demanding jobs will need to spend a bit more time at home. After 2 weeks, most breast augmentation patients may resume nearly all of their regular activities, including low-impact exercise. Dr. Rao gives you more detailed guidelines during your consultation and pre-op appointments.
As they heal, your augmented breasts will gradually adopt an attractive, natural-looking shape and softness. Over time, your scars also fade to very inconspicuous, flat marks. For many years, you can enjoy your renewed sense of confidence and your curves in your favorite outfits.

Answers to Common Questions
What size implants are right for you?
The right size for your body depends on a number of factors such as your height, weight, and the width of your shoulders, chest, and hips. And of course, your current breast volume plays a role.
The best way to determine what feels right for you is to try out our breast implant sizers during your consultation. Implants begin at 125 cc to correct breast asymmetry; most patients end up with implants between 300 and 400 cc.
Do breast implants need to be replaced?
While breast implants are long-lasting medical devices, it's important to know that they do not last forever. Both Mentor and Sientra assign an average "lifespan" of 10 years to their breast implants. This is because the outer shell of the implant can begin to weaken past the 10-year mark. However, many women have no problems with their implants and leave them in for well over a decade.
How much does breast augmentation cost?
Because every procedure is a little bit different, it's difficult to quote an exact cost without first meeting with a patient in person. The final cost of your procedure will include surgeon's fees, the cost of anesthesia, operating room costs, and will also cover the preoperative and postoperative visits with Dr. Rao.
Is it possible to combine breast augmentation and other procedures?
Many of our patients decide to undergo multiple procedures at once, both to save on fees and to consolidate their recovery time. With breast augmentation, it's common to add a breast lift, tummy tuck, and liposuction — a combination that's known as a mommy makeover.
